I wish upon a collapsed comb.

Give a more troubling sight than a downed horse:

two, then, two fallen slow on that comb.

I was asking for it, setting it upright: pretending, of course.

It’s not true to say they’re resting, supine.

Something was coming for to get them

and it wasn’t a sleep, and it wasn’t a dream.

It must have been blunt, a sudden thing.

My hair is almost done showing

how light-ready the comb had loosened it.

Is it over? I ask the quiet kitchen stone. If it’s gone,

can I go then, too? go from the table’s unbrightening?

May I be excused?
